Beth Stroud reinstated

Good news to report – Beth Stroud (or as she’s known in the media, the “lesbian pastor”) has been reinstated. The United Methodist Church panel reviewing her appeal found that her defrocking must be nullified because several key terms under which she was disciplined have never been adequately defined by the proper church bodies.

This doesn’t end the issue. The church can still appeal to the UMC’s highest tribunal, the Judicial Council. And the UMC General Conference can still define the relevant terms in a way that would stand up in a legal proceeding (although the Conference isn’t scheduled to convene again until 2008). Also, Beth has not indicated that she will resume an offical clergy role until all legal proceedings are complete.

But it’s still a good piece of news on which to end the week.

I really can’t abide by any religion that spends its time trying to figure out who to discriminate against and how to do it legally. She’d better damned well get reinstated. Now I’m going to go watch a certain seriously unrealistic lesbian soap opera and go to bed.
