Leaving Black Marks on the Linoleum, Country Song on the Radio

Is that Bill Monroe in the drawing? I’ve spent a fair amount of my adult life (and, yes, my childhood in a non-rural setting) defending my love of country music…or hiding it. I distinctly remember waking up to the sounds of ‘Harper Valley PTA’ on the radio when I was seven and thinking what a great song Jeannie C. Riley was singing and how I wanted to learn the lyrics. (Well, this is just a little Peyton Place and you’re all Harper Valley hypocrites.) And this is a time when You Light Up My Life was the only song I cared about…I was a cool kid!

I have found that country music is one (if not the main) genre that people will discount the ENTIRE group of artists for fear of sounding uncool. I encourage (and, perhaps challenge) you all to go to The Chicago Country Music Festival this weekend in Grant Park and see how cool Wynonna and Brad Paisley are…Country Music has gained some fans over the last few years…and with artists like Garrison Starr, Terri Clark and Wynonna, the genre is gaining a more diverse fan base, but there’s still work to do…so with The Taste of Chicago going on in Grant Park at the same time this weekend, it’s safe to check out The Country Music Festival without people thinking you’re there specfically for the country music…
