Don’t Go Chewing in Bed

Conference calls. I add to the chain during conference calls. *Not* in lieu of actual work...

So, I’ve been working on this here gum wrapper chain for about 3 years now. Intermittently, mind you. Mostly during boring conference calls when I don’t have to take notes. It’s been slow-going this year since I don’t have as many conference calls these days – but it’s been *really* slow-going recently. Apparently, gum wrappers as we know them have become nearly extinct.

I blame Wrigley. They make Juicy Fruit, Doublemint, Big Red, and Wrigley’s Spearmint gum. Worldwide, Wrigley also makes Airwaves, Alpine, Eclipse, Extra, Freedent, Orbit, P.K, and Winterfresh gum. And now, they no longer make gum wrappers. That’s right. Open up a new pack of Wrigley’s gum and you’ll find sticks of gum snug in their foils…but no extra paper wrapper.

Maybe it makes sense. For the environment. For cost-effectiveness. But not for me. Is this the end of my gum wrapper chain? Is there any stick gum out there not made by Wrigley? My gum, why hast thou forsaken me?

(Shout out to Jay on this post…)

You seem pretty defensive about when you make your chewing gum chain, Miranda—but the question everyone’s asking…when do you do your blogging? Just during boring conference calls?

I bet Mrs. Madrigal has a few stale sticks of gum up in her junk drawer.

You have become obsessed with Mrs. Madrigal. Are you her secret lover…?

    Alas, it is true.
Actually…I think I need closure on the “Mr.”
I need to know if he exists. Go on, toddle on up there and ask to borrow a cup of sugar.

Wrigley’s did stop putting wrappers on their stick gum a number of years ago. I had working on a gum wrapper chain on and off for years. Last fall I wanted to work on it again and suddenly discovered there no wrappers to be easly found.

Some of the old fashioned gums: Beemans, Teaberry, Black Jack and Clove still have gum wrappers. I bought some for my paper chain, but in the meantime I realized we are losing a piece of history with the loss of gum wrappers. A sweet reminder of my childhood, like only 3 channels on television.
