All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan

Good King Wenceslaus looked out...on the Grill of Stephen...So, here we are again. Suddenly it’s that terrible week before Christmas – all the stress, all the shopping, all the work that has to be done before you can walk away and just be with family and friends at the end of the year. I, myself, have a million projects at the office to finish before I can enter the luscious world represented by those two most beautiful words: “Vacation Days.” Plus, I still have presents to buy. Each year I say I’m going to start earlier. Beginning of November. October, even. And each year I do manage to buy at least one gift early. Then I sit around feeling virtuous about that lonely purchase until, suddenly, it’s mid-December. So now I’m running around – actually, surfing around, buying things, having them shipped home, trying to figure out what kind of impulse buys I can actually get away with giving as legitimate presents. Ah Christmas.

It’s all made even more absurd, of course, by the fact that pretty much all my remaining relatives are Jewish. My parents have an inter-faith marriage – which is really overstating it. My dad grew up Lutheran, my mom grew up Jewish, and together they take great care not to practice any religion. Interestingly, as my dad has gotten older, he bears an increasing resemblance to a curmudgeonly rabbi with a penchant for Lutheran hymns. Oy vey. My mother, on the other hand, is in the middle of her annual one-woman quest to fill the house with Santa Clauses.

Still, the work will get done, the gifts will get purchased, family unity of a sort will be achieved. Let’s just hope that this year’s holiday cheer comes with electricity (unlike last year).

Need help….looking for a new wireless service. Can anybody vouch for their company? If all the wireless services in Chicago were going to race, who would win? Who would look good finishing? Who would cheer from the sidelines?
    Help? Please!

hmm. I use Sprint. Haven’t had any problems with them (knock wood) – signal is usually clear, price is reasonable. Haven’t used any other services so can’t do a comparison for ya…

    Good luck, Jen!

Sprint all the way baby. I’ve had the same phone for 4 years and it’s been a pure delight, no problems. Phone was a bit pricey..$150 Samsung from Best Buy, but it’s worth it to get a better phone….none of that free phone crap. Now my phone seems like a hockey puck compared to the new tiny ones out, but I still love it anyway.
