If There Ain’t, There Oughta Be

Marty buys most of his shirts at Katy K's Ranch Dressing in Nashville...

Well, there wasn’t and there shoulda been.

A crowd, that is.

Last night’s concert at The Arie Crown Theatre (located at McCormick Place) was one for the record books. It was Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. BIG in the Nashville scene, seemingly unknown outside Music City.

Now Marty is an excellent Mandolinist, the husband of Connie Smith, ex-husband of Cindy Cash (and, thus, ex-son-in-law of Johnny Cash), he has the best hair in country music…it was Marty who placed Mother Maybelle’s L-5 Gibson in the Country Music Hall of Fame as the first item when it was reopened a couple years ago. During FanFair, Marty holds ‘Marty Stuart’s Late Night Jam at the Ryman‘, the historic home of The Grand Old Opry.

Given all this, it was the most poorly attendedconcert ever! Now I’ve had the fear before that I would be one of just a few attendees. This time it came true. Miranda and I had Pit Seats, Row B, which was our first clue. The fact that it was at McCormick Place and SO out of the way was another hint. The fact that US99 never mentioned it—that I’m in Marty Stuart’s Fan Club and never received any information was a bad sign. But I’ll give it to Marty, he was a real sport and joked about the small crowd. And he and his Fabulous Superlatives were excellent and gave it their all. These guys can pick with the best of them. Connie Smith didn’t make a surprise appearance, so we’ll just have to wait until Marty Stuart’s Late Night Jam and The Fan Club Party at Fan Fair next June.

One of the weirdest concert experiences I’ve ever had! (and you know we go to a *lot* of concerts…) It was still a great concert, though, since Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives give 110% every minute of the show. Next time, Marty needs to play the Old Town School!
